【ストーリー】1946年第２次世界大戦後の蘇州で、地方名士とその妻、妹、そして年老いた召使の4人一家。

結婚倦怠期に至った夫婦のもとへ、夫の友人であり妻の元恋人でもある医師が訪れたことから波紋が生じる。

更に妹が医師に好意を寄せたことで更に複雑に……

男女3人の複雑で微妙な感情が濃厚に表現され、数人の登場人物による心理劇が圧倒的な緊迫感の中で展開してゆく。
